It May Be Time to Expand Your College Search: A Look at Midwestern College Options

By on April 21, 2014 in College Visit Highlights

Did you know that there are over 4,000 colleges in the United States? Yet the majority of Californians focus on a few West Coast colleges. When they do decide to look outside that area, they tend to think of a smattering of highly selective East Coast universities. With dropping acceptance rates at the University of California campuses, and increasing selectivity and diminishing merit awards at many of the East Coast colleges, students may want to take a broader look at the many excellent options across the United States (and internationally).
In the next month I’m headed to the Midwest to attend the Independent Educational Consultants Association Conference in Indianapolis, and to tour five colleges in the Midwest: Beloit College, College of Wooster, Lawrence University, Marquette University, and Ripon College. During this time I will highlight the variety of college experiences available in the Midwest. This part of the country has many colleges that offer an excellent education, but they are generally not as well-known, and as a result are less selective. To attract students to their campuses, many of the colleges offer generous merit scholarships that can help make their colleges more affordable. This presents a significant opportunity for California students.
I hope you will travel along with me, as I share the things I learn on my Midwestern journey. You just might see a college that could be a good fit for you.
